NHC XI Previews



Lone Star Park Handicapping Championship Series
Where: Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas
When: Pre-qualifying tournaments on Saturday, Feb. 7; Saturday, April 4; and Saturday, July 25, leading to the championship final on Saturday, Oct. 24.
How much: Free; pre-qualifiers are limited to the first 450 entrants; finale is open to the top 50 finishers of the three pre-qualifying events
Format: Contestants make 10 mythical wagers of the following type: two (2) $50 Win, Place, Show on one horse (total of $300); two (2) $10 Exacta box with three horses (total of $120); two (2) $20 Exacta box with three horses (total of $240); two (2) $5 Trifecta box with four horses (total of $240); two (2) $1 Superfecta box with five horses (total of $240). In the July 25 pre-qualifier, five of the plays much come from races at Lone Star Park while the other five must be at the following simulcast tracks: Saratoga, Arlington, Del Mar or Louisiana Downs. In the finals, all 10 plays are optional. In addition to the top six finishers in the finals earning NHC berths (which also includes round-trip airfare from Dallas-Fort Worth to Las Vegas and hotel accommodations at the Red Rock Resort, prize money is $1,500 for first place and $500 for second through sixth. NHC Last Chance Qualifier
Where: Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nev.
When: Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010
How Much: $500
Format: Contestants make 15 mythical win and place wagers, with eight races being mandatory as selected by tournament organizers and the other seven being player’s choice from a list of eligible tracks running that day. Payoffs are capped at $42 to win and $22 to place. This contest awards the last five NHC berths before the finals at the Red Rock on Jan. 29-30, 2010, with 70 percent of entry fees going to the NHC purse. The remaining 30 percent is distributed as prize money.

Surfside Super Qualifier
Where: Surfside Race Place in Del Mar, Calif.
When: Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 26-27
Field: Limited to the first 300 entries.
How much: $500 for NHC Tour Members; $625 for non-members; limit 3 entries per person
Format: This is an NHC Super Qualifier with six NHC berths compared to the regular Surfside qualifiers that have three. Contestants place eight mythical $20 across-the-board wagers on the last eight races at Santa Anita each day, with a cap of $100 to win, $50 to place and $25 to show. First place wins 40 percent of the prize pool ($12,000 with a full field of 200), with 20 percent for second, 10 percent for third, 6 percent for fourth, 4 percent for fifth, and 2 percent each for sixth through 15th.

Golden Gate Fields DRF Handicapping Contests
Where: Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif.
When: Friday, Dec. 11; Saturday, Dec. 12; Sunday, Dec. 13
How Much: Free; limit 1 entry per person
Format: Contest includes a mythical $20 win bet on races three through eight with the pari-mutuel payoffs determining the standings. Cards must be turned in by 5 minutes to post of the third race. Each day is a separate contest with one Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship, berth, including airfare and hotel accommodations at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas for the Jan. 29-30 finals. Entry cards will be handed out at the admission gates each day until 10 minutes prior to the third race. There is no prize money with only the champion winning the trip to Vegas. In the case of a tie, a random draw will be held to determine the winner of the NHC berth and trip. Winners must respond by Dec. 20 to claim their trip, or the next highest finisher will be drawn (with another random drawing if needed).

Format: No  walk-up entries accepted. Entries must be paid in advance by close of business on Thursday, Dec. 10. Contestants will make 15 mythical $2 win-and-place wagers with eight live Beulah Park races being mandatory and the other seven being player’s choice. Prices are capped at 20-1 to win ($42) and 10-1 to place ($22). The top six finishers who have not previously qualified for the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship will earn berths to the finals on Jan. 29-30, 2010, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, including round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations. Eighty percent of entry fees will be returned as prize money. Assuming a full field of 350, first place would be worth $30,000, with $15,000 for second, $7,500 for third, $5,000 for fourth, $2,500 for fifth, $1,500 for sixth through 10th, $1,000 for 11th through 15th.

DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship Qualifier

How Much: $150 ($48 to be used as a live bankroll with the remainder going to the prize pool); no limit on the number of entries per person
Format: Contestants make $2 win-and-place wagers on 12 different races. Players may use the same horse for both bets or choose to bet one horse to win and another to place. Since it’s a live-money format, there is no cap on prices. Placings will be determined by accumulated earnings. In case of a tie, the higher placing will go to the player with the highest percentage of winners selected. In addition to their live-money earnings (which must be cashed out at the end of the tournament on Dec. 6), first place will be worth $7,500, with $4,500 for second, $2,500 for third, $1,000 for fourth, $500 for fifth and $300 for sixth through 10th. Last Chance Freeze-Out Tournament?????
Where: Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN
When: Saturday, Nov. 28
How Much: $600 of which $100 is entry fee and $500 is live bankroll. 100% of entry fees will be returned as prize money.
Format: Play will begin at approximately noon (central time). Ten mandatory races will be selected for the tournament. All players must wager at least $100 on each of the ten races (tenth race wager is a minimum of $100 or 20% of bankroll, whichever is larger). Players may wager the $100 required minimum in any combination of bets offered WITHIN the contest race. Races will be bet one at a time in chronological order. No advanced wagering is allowed. Any money won through tournament wagers can then be wagered in subsequent bets.  Any player that does not have at least $100 remaining to wager in a tournament race will be eliminated from play. At the conclusion of the 10th contest race, the two players with the largest bankrolls will win an NHC entry. Prize money to be paid as follows: 1st : 50% of entry fees; 2nd : 35%; 3rd : 15%. Remaining bankrolls are returned to players at the conclusion of the tournament.

Fall Meet Handicapping Challenge

When: Preliminary tournaments are held Nov. 1, Nov. 4, Nov. 8, Nov. 11, Nov. 15, and Nov. 18, with the finals on Sunday, Nov. 22
How Much: $30
Field: Preliminary tournaments limited to 400 entries; finals includes only top 25 finishers from preliminary tourneys.
Format: In the preliminary events, each contestant starts with a mythical $24 and must bet exactly $2 to win and place on six contest races, Churchill’s third through eighth races. Splitting the wagers between two different horses is allowed. Points are based on the pari-mutuel payoffs earned by those selections with a cap of $42 to win and $22 to place. In addition to the top 25 finishers earning a spot in the Nov. 22 finals to play for the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship berths, the winner of the preliminary contest will win $1,400 with $800 for second, $500 for third, $400 for fourth, $300 for fifth, $250 for sixth, $200 for seventh and $150 for eighth. In the Nov. 22 finals, the same format and payout structure will be in place, with the addition of the two berths in the NHC finals on Jan. 29-30, 2010, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas along with roundtrip airfare and hotel accommodations.

TwinSpires Biggest Vegas Qualifier Ever

Aqueduct Handicapping Challenge
Where: Aqueduct Racetrack in Jamaica, N.Y.

How Much: $400; limit 2 entries per person
Field: Limited to the first 200 entries
Format: Contestants will make 10 win-and-place wagers each day of the two-day event from the contest tracks of Aqueduct, Calder and Churchill with at least five of the plays required to be at Aqueduct. Nine of the plays each day will be $20 to win and place, while the other one will be $40 to win and place. Win payoffs capped at 15-1 (or maximum payoff of $320 on a $20 win bet or $640 on a $40 play), while place and show odds are capped at 8-1 (or a maximum payoff of $180 on a $20 wager and $360 on a $40 wager). In addition to the top three earning NHC berths for the finals on Jan. 29-30, 2010, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, those players will also receive hotel accommodations as well as reimbursement of up to $400 in airfare to Las Vegas. All entry fees will be returned as prize money. Assuming a full field of 200, first place will be worth $35,000, with $10,000 for second, $7,500 for third, $5,000 for fourth, and paying down to $600 for those from 16th through 20th. Ultimate Handicappers Invitational

How Much: $3,000 of which $1,000 will go to the prize pool (more than 100% to be paid out) and $2,000 to be used for contest wagers.
Format: Players will be wagering on at least 10 of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races held on Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita. Wagering bankroll on Friday is $800. On Saturday, players begin with Friday’s ending bankroll plus the remaining $1,200. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is mandatory and all players must wager. Each player MUST BET AT LEAST HALF of his/her current bankroll on each race (10 races minimum). Example: On Friday, the first race that a player wagers on, total bet must be at least $400 (half of $800 starting bankroll). If the player cashes that race for $2600 making his current bankroll $3,000, the next race player wagers on: total bet must be at least $1500. Any bet offered WITHIN any of the races is allowed. Any combination of bets can be made:win, place, show, exactas, trifectas and superfectas (ten cent superfectas are allowed). Top two players at the conclusion of Saturday earn NHC entries. Prize money paid as follows: first, 60% of entry fees; second, 20%, third, 10%; fourth, 6%; fifth, 4%.

Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge

Format: Tournament races will include only races from Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park on Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7, 2009, including all fourteen Breeders’ Cup Championships races. Wager types to be permitted are Win, Place, Show, Exacta and Trifecta only. A minimum of $600 must be bet on at least 5 races Friday, November 6, totaling a minimum of $3,000 wagered. A minimum of $900 must be bet on at least 5 races Saturday, November 7, totaling a minimum of $4,500 wagered. The final race of the event is the Breeders’ Cup Classic. There are no maximums – players may bet as much as they want whenever they wish. The player with the largest bankroll after the Classic on Saturday is the Grand Prize winner.The prize money is to be determined by the final number of entries. One hundred percent of all prize pool funds ($2,500 per player) will be awarded as prize money, plus $25,000 in additional funds. Based upon 100 players, prize money will be $275,000 and the top ten finishers will receive: first, $150,000; second, $50,000; third, $25,000; fourth, $15,000; fifth, $10,000; sixth through 10th, $5,000 apiece. The top six finishers also earn berths in the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship finals on Jan. 29-30, 2010, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, including $1,00 toward hotel/travel expenses. Format: Contestants purchase $200 betting card to be used on contest day. Players must bet exactly 10 races on the day with a minimum of four from Meadowlands plus six additional races from a list of contest tracks with a minimum $20 bet per race and a maximum of $100 using win and place only. One horse allowed per race. Since it’s a live-money contest, players keep all pari-mutuel winnings. Based on 150 entries, the purse will be $30,000 and adjusted according to the actual number of entries, with an estimated $12,000 for first (or 40 percent of all entry fees), $6,000 for second, $3,000 for third, $2,250 for fourth, and $1,500 for fifth. NTRA Qualifying Handicapping Tournament
Where: Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.
When: Saturday, Oct. 3
Field: The 25 contestants will come from the top 5 finishers at the qualifying events held May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, and Sept. 12.
How Much: $140, entry fee of $100 plus $40 live bankroll in the qualifying events
Format: Limit of three entries per person in qualifying events, but player may qualify only once for the finals. Contestants make $2 win-and-place wagers on races 1-10 at Louisiana Downs on the contest days. There are no capped payoffs. Players keep all pari-mutuel winnings, plus first place in weekly contests wins $2,000, with $1,000 for second, $500 for third, $300 for fourth and $200 for fifth (prizes based on 100 entries; prizes may be more or less depending on number of entries which are capped at 200). In the Oct. 3 finals, the purse will be $20,000 (based on 100 entries in each of the qualifying events) in addition to the top 3 finishers earning NHC berths.

Only one horse allowed per race. Payoffs will be capped at $42 to win and $22 to place. In addition to the top three earning NHC berths for the finals on Jan. 29-30, 2010, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, those players will also receive round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations. Based on a full field of 150, first prize is an estimated $10,800 (60% of total prize pool after 20% deducted to pay fees for NHC qualifiers), with $3,600 for second (or 20%), $1,800 for third (or 10%), $1,260 for fourth (or 7%), $540 for fifth (or 3%). Sixth through 10th receive a Hastings Prize Pack.

Claiming Crown Ultimate Handicappers Open

NTRA/DRF Trackside Arlington Park Handicapping Championship

Field: Limited to the first 300 entrants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Format: Players must wager on a total of 15 races with at least 10 of them being on races that day at Arlington Park. Monmouth Park vs. Canterbury Park Handicapping Challenge

Format: This is the second contest in the country to offer a co-mingled leaderboard between multiple trakcs, and the first to offer NHC spots. The contest will include all the races at Monmouth (except the first) and all the races at Canterbury (except the last two) on the contest day. Players must make a minimum of $50 in wagers -- using the Win, Place, Show, Exacta, Trifecta or Superfecta pools -- on at least eight contest races with at least four races being at Monmouth and at least four races at Canterbury. There is no maximum on the number of races played or the amount wagered. The only mandatory race is the 7th at Canterbury. All entry fees will be returned as prize money with all contestants also keeping their live-money earnings. Survival at the Shore

Format: The Survival at the Shore is an elimination game. The organizers pick 3 races a day, the player picks one horse in each race and needs one of those horses to hit the board in order to stay in the game. If all 3 finish out of the money, the player is eliminated, though each player gets a "Life Preserver" for a second chance to stay alive. Additional Life Preservers will be awarded for those who last until the end of June and then again at the end of July. Players also get a mythical $2 across-the-board on each horse. At the end of the contest, whoever has “survived” the longest is the winner with the highest bankroll being used as a tie-breaker.

How Much: $500 (with free entry for top 30 contestants in the Beat the Host Championship on March 14 and XpressBet Live on March 21) plus $400 live bankroll.
Field: Limited to the first 300 entrant.
Format: There are 20 mandatory races, with 10 on Saturday and 10 on Sunday. Contestants must place a live $20 win wager on one horse in each mandatory race (failure to do so results in disqualification). In addition to keeping live-money earnings, first place is worth $10,000, with $5,000 for second, and $2,500 apiece for third and fourth. The top six finishers earn berths in NHC XI at the Red Rock Resort in Las vegas on Jan. 29-30, 2010, with seventh through 10th place winning berths in Coast Casinos' Horseplayer World Series at the Orleans in Las Vegas.
