On getting to Saratoga: To say that this was the most miserable of my annual trips north to Saratoga is an easy assertion, and that includes the 1978 version that involved taking an Adirondack Trailways bus. To say that it rained the whole way up Tuesday evening does not begin to convey the biblical force of the ceaseless torrent. The first 50 miles took over two hours, the usual three-hour trip was five. But just as Exit 14 on the Northway from Albany to Montreal came into sight, the skies closed, the fully-lit and empty track popped into view like a jewel, and all seemed right with the world. I'm done complaining, at least until my first tough beat.
